This book is devoted to the theory of geoelectromagnetic oscillations and waves, i.e. waves of natural origin arising in the Earth’s crust, in the ocean, in the atmosphere, in the ionosphere, in the magnetosphere and in the interplanetary medium in front of the magnetosphere. We have sought to give a simple and clear presentation of the physical picture of the waves. When selecting the material special attention was paid to the theoretical inferences that can be easily compared with the observational data. Complicated and unwieldy calculations were omitted where possible. At the same time, where formulae have been presented without derivation, we have tried to explain their physical meaning.
The Data Analysis Center for Geomagnetism and Space Magnetism has dual aspects: it is a facility of the Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University and, at the same time, it is part of the international organization, World Data Centers.

In China, oil and gas resources mainly accumulated in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental basins, and the proven reserves of oil and gas in continental basins account for three-quarters and nearly half of China’s total reserves, respectively (Zhai, 1996). Almost 95% of the proven oil reserves in China are concentrated in continental basins (Dai, 2000). After more than half a century of exploration, a large number of structural reservoirs and some lithological and stratigraphic reservoirs were discovered in continental basins. Although the exploration efforts of many Mesozoic and Cenozoic basins has been relatively high, especially for eastern basins, there is still a great potential for the exploration of lithological and stratigraphic reservoirs. In order to promote petroleum exploration development, we must develop new technologies and methods, and strengthen the basic research theories targeting lithological and stratigraphic reservoirs, using petroleum geological characteristics of continental basins (Jia, 2003). <...>
Site characterization is a fundamental step towards the proper design, construction and long term performance of all types of geotechnical projects, ranging from foundation, excavation, earth dams, embankments, seismic hazards, environmental issues, tunnels, near and offshore structures. The Fourth International Conference on Site Characterization (ISC’4) was held near the beautiful coastal town of Porto de Galinhas, Pernambuco – Brazil, from September 18-21, 2012, under the responsibility of TC-102/TC-16 on In-Situ Testing of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the Brazilian Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ABMS), and the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil (UFPE). The fourth conference followed the successful series of international conferences held in Atlanta (ISC-1, 1998), Porto (ISC-2, 2004), and Taipei (ISC-3, 2008).
Macroseismic effects of the principal earthquakes occurring in the United States from 1568 through 1989 are described. Principal earthquakes are defined as those of Modified Mercalli intensity > VI or Richter magnitude > 4.5. Exceptions are the State of Alaska and the offshore areas of California, Oregon, and Washington, where the magnitude cutoff is > 5.5.
