Geomechanics and geotechnics of particulate media. Proceedings of the international symposium on geomechanics and geotechnics / Геомеханика и геотехника дисперсных сред. Материалы международного симпозиума по геомеханике и геотехнике

The first international workshop on soil crushability was held in Sheffield, U.K. on September 1997 and was the origin of a subsequent series of meetings starting with the “International Workshop on Soil Crushability” IWSC’99 atYamaguchi University in Ube, Japan on July 1999. As a result of these workshops, the research area widened from soil crushability to a re-assessment of fundamental aspects of soil mechanics theories using micromechanics.

Geomechanics and geotechnics. From micro to macro / Геомеханика и геотехника. От микро до макро

This paper presents an experimental investigation on contact behaviors of idealized granules which are bonded together with cement. First, by using the specimen preparation devices, two aluminum alloy rods with the same size are glued together by cement with the cement water ratio 0.34.

Geomechanics for Energy and a Sustainable Environment / Геомеханика для энергетики и устойчивости окружающей среды

Energy consumption is strongly linked to the development and quality of human civilization. On average, 85% of our primary energy comes from fossil fuels; as a result, carbon-based resources face depletion, and there are concerns about massive greenhouse gas emission and corresponding climate change. Energy geotechnology must play a key role in the development of a sustainable energy scheme, involving energy resources such as natural carbohydrates, nuclear energy, and renewable sources (wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower, biofuels, and tidal and wave energy), but it must not be restricted. Moreover, geotechnical engineering is required to provide new techniques to preserve the environment from a sustainability perspective, including CO2 emission and energy-related waste (e.g., bottom and fly ashes, and nuclear waste) reduction, as well as the introduction of new, environmentally-friendly, and low-carbon-emitting materials for sustainable development.

This book includes recent advances in Geomechanics for Energy and the Sustainable Environment, including four research articles and one state-of-the-art review. We hope this book can provide guidance on how to deal with conventional and renewable energy sources and environment-related geotechnical engineering issues, from fundamental research to practical implementation. In addition, recent attempts in CO2 and industrial waste deduction, and the development of new, bio-inspired materials/methods for sustainable development are introduced in this book.

Geomechanics from micro to macro. Volume 1 / Геомеханика от микро до макро. Том 1

The International Symposium on Geomechanics from Micro to Macro (IS-Cambridge 2014) was held from the 1st to the 3rd of September 2014, at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. This was the third symposium organised under the auspices of Technical Committee 105 (Geo-Mechanics from Micro to Macro) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). The first symposium was held at Yamaguchi University, Japan, in 2006, which was followed by the second symposium at Tongji University, China, in 2010.

Geomechanics of failures. Advanced topics / Геомеханника разломов. Дополнительные темы

Geotechnical failures, specially the catastrophic ones, are an excellent experience and a source of inspiration to improve our current understanding of phenomena and our procedures and tools for analysis and prediction. This unconventional manner to learn Geomechanics is the essence of this book. In general, Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical text books describe first the concepts and the theoretical developments and then apply them to interpret or solve a particular application. This book has a different approach. The case (a failure) is first described and then an explanation is sought. This approach is developed through a set of steps which can be summarized as follows.

Geomechanics of oil and gas wells / Геомеханика нефтяных и газовых скважин

This book presents an integrated approach to the study of geomechanical processes occurring in oil- and gas-bearing formations during their development. It includes: the choice of a model that takes into account the basic properties of rocks; experimental finding of model parameters; and numerical modeling as well as direct physical modeling of deformation and filtration processes in reservoir and host rocks. The main features of the behavior of rocks are taken into account, such as anisotropy of the mechanical properties of rocks during elastoplastic deformation, dependence of permeability on the total stress tensor, contribution of the filtration flow to the stress state of the formation, and influence of not only tangential but also normal stresses on the transition to inelastic deformation. It is shown how the presented approach allows solving practical problems of increasing the productivity of wells, oil recovery, and ensuring the stability of wellbores.

This book is intended for specialists-geomechanics working primarily in the oil and gas sector, teachers, graduate students, and students of oil universities and faculty, as well as for all those who are interested in scientific and technological development and meeting the enormous needs of mankind in raw materials and energy

Geomechanics of sand production and sand control / Геомеханика выноса песка в скважинах и контроль пескопроявления

A significant portion of the world’s oil and gas reservoirs is in various degrees of unconsolidation with extensive sanding problems. The problems are observed in both production and injection wells in the oil industries. Similar problems are observed in CO2 injectors and wastewater injectors in CCS (Carbon Capture Storage) and wastewater management industries. These problems include plugging the perforations and formations of production and injection wells, plugging the downhole screens and the gravel pack, surface facility erosion, and collapse of borehole and cased hole. On the other hand, the controlled volume of sand production significantly increases the well productivity and injectivity for both light and heavy oil reservoirs. <...>

Geomechanics research. Rock mass response to mining activities. Inferring large-scale rock mass failure / Исследования в области геомеханики. Реакция горного массива на добычу полезных ископаемых. Вывод о крупномасштабном разрушении горной массы

Just a few days after I started working at a deep underground hard rock mine as a geotechnical engineer, a double fatality happened. Two miners carrying a heavy pump up a decline were killed by a rockfall. Investigation that took place described the accident as “unpredictable” and stated that the support was adequate for the prevailing conditions. One day, soon after the rockfall, whe I was walking up the decline, I noticed that at that particular spot there were some wet patches at the back and some water trickling at one sidewall.

Geomorphic hazards / Геоморфологические опасности

A geomorphic hazard results from any landform change that adversely affects the geomorphic stability of a site (Schumm, 1988) and that intersects the human use system with adverse socioeconomic impacts (White, 1974).
