Geology and seismic stratigraphy of the antarctic margin / Геология и сейсмическая стратиграфия антарктической окраины

The Antarctic Ice Sheet has greatly affected global climate, sea level, ocean circulation, and southern hemisphere biota during Cenozoic times. Much of our understanding of the evolution of the ice sheet has been inferred from isotopic studies on distant deep-ocean sediments, because few Cenozoic rocks are exposed on the Antarctic continent. Yet, large differences occur between past ice volumes inferred from isotopic studies and those inferred from low-latitude sea-level variation.

Geology and stable isotope studies of the Carlin gold deposit, Nevada / Геологические исследования и изучение стабильных изотопов на месторождении золота Карлин, штат Невада

The Carlin gold deposit, largest of the epithermal disseminated replacement-type gold deposits discovered to date in the United States, formed as a result of hydrothermal processes associated with a shallow-seated late Tertiary igneous event. The orebodies formed by the replacement of carbonate minerals, principally calcite, in thin-bedded argillaceous arenaceous dolomitic beds favorable for mineralization within the upper 245+ m of the Roberts Mountains Formation. Early hydrothermal fluids dissolved calcite and deposited quartz. Fluids during the main hydrothermal stage introduced Si, Al, K, Ba, Fe, S, and organic materials, plus Au, As, Sb, Hg, and Tl; quartz and pyrite were deposited, potassium clays formed, and more calcite was dissolved. Sulfides and sulfosalts containing As, Sb, Hg, and Tl, and base metal sulfides of Pb, Zn, and Cu probably formed later in the paragenesis.

The main stage of ore deposition was terminated with the deposition of barite veins and the onset of boiling. The fluids lost H20, C02, H2S, and other components, leading to the production of H2S04 in the upper levels of the deposit and to subsequent intense acid leaching and oxidation of rocks and ore near the surface. Within this zone, calcite and large amounts of dolomite were removed, sulfides and organic compounds oxidized, kaolinite and anhydrite formed, and silica was added. After the hydrothermal event, the upper part of the deposit underwent weak oxidation by cooler ground water.

Geology and tectonic evolution of the Central-Southern Apennines, Italy / Геология и тектоническая эволюция Центрально-Южных Апеннин, Италия

The Geological-Structural Map of the Central-Southern Apennines (Italy) provides entirely revised and original cartography for a large sector of the orogenic belt that stretches along peninsular Italy. New data collected by the authors over the past 20 years, together with fi eld revisions of published data, and available subsurface data are synthesized in two geological map sheets at scale 1:250,000 giving a regional overview of the stratigraphy, geometry, and structure of the Apenninic fold-and-thrust belt.

Geology and tectonics of Gorny Altai. Guide-book for post-symp. excursion the 4th Intern. Symp. of the IGCP Project 283 "Geodynamic Evolution of the Paleoasian Ocean"

This guide-book includes new information on geological structure and geodynamic interpretation for the Gorny Altai area located in Central Asia (south-western part of Siberia) near to the western cross of Russia, Mongolia and China boundaries. The guide-book was prepared for the 4th International Symposium on the IGCP Project 283 "Geodynamic evolution of Paleoasian Ocean" convened in Novosiblrsk (Russia) 15-18, June, 1993.

One of the most important results of this work was compilation of а Geodynamic Мар of the Paleoasian Ocean of 1:2,500,000 scale. The majority of geodynamic environments distinguished in the map are widespread within the territory of Gorny Altai. ln the guide-book the authors tried to characterize а variety of these environments which reflect а long evolution of the Paleoasian ocean during the Paleozoic. Thus, the guide-book may Ье considered as explanatory note to the Gorny-Altai part of the Geodynamic Мар (Berzin et al., 1993). Since, not ail the structural and compositional units have an uniform geodynamic interpretation, the materials present in the guidebook are а good subject for discussion. <...>

Geology and mineralogy of gemstones / Геология и минералогия драгоценных камней

Earth Science departments at universities across North America are diversifying their academic offerings for entry level science courses. Among topics that are catching on are the mineralogy and geology of gem materials. This textbook aims to support these courses. At the same time, the geological settings that give rise to gemstone deposits are as unique and fascinating as those for precious and base metal deposits.

Geology applied to engineering / Геология в инженерном деле

Geology Applied to Engineering, Second Edition, represents a significant and insightful update of the first edition. Abdul Shakoor, Emeritus Professor, Kent State University, Ohio, has joined Terry West, Professor, Purdue University, Indiana, in the revision of the first edition. Together, they:
• Effectively and strategically reorganized the arrangement of chapters so that they are cohesive and build on material that is germane to related subjects.
• Added a new chapter that is solely dedicated to the evaluation of construction materials (Chapter 9).
• Expanded the coverage and scope of important topics such as the engineering properties of rocks (Chapter 8), slope stability and ground subsidence (Chapter 15), and significant fields in engineering geology, such as highways, dams, tunnels, and rock blasting (Chapter 21). <...>

Geology for dummies / Геология для чайников

Geology is the study of the earth. By default this means that geology is a vast, complex, and intricate topic. But “vast, intricate, and complex” does not necessarily mean difficult. Many folks interested in geology just don’t know where to start. Minerals? Rocks? Glaciers? Volcanoes? Fossils? Earthquakes? The sheer number of topics covered under the heading “geology” can be overwhelming.

Geology for engineers and environmental scientists / Геология для инженеров и ученых-экологов

The content and technical level of a geology text for engineers is a matter of broadly differing opinion. The type of geology course required for engineering students at llniversities around the United States varies from introductory physical geology, earth science, engineering geology, or to no course at all. This situation results from diHerences in philosophy, engineering curricula, and geology faculty available to teach such a course. Geologi; fo·r Engineers and Envirom11tmtnl Scientists is an attempt to provide a broad introduction to the earth sciences with an emphasis on engineering and environmental applications of the science <...>

Geology for ground engineering projects / Геология для наземных инженерных проектов

The objective of this book is to provide the engineer with an effective understanding of the composition, mode of formation and architecture of rocks and soils, geological structures and alteration phenomena, as far as they might impinge on the planning, design, mitigation of risks and financial/time constraints of ground engineering projects. Project engineers need to have a sound comprehension of geological models presented to them, in particular their reliability, their limitations and, of vital importance, the assumptions made in their formulation <...>
