This book is a basic guide to field techniques used in geological mapping. It is meant to be kept in camp with you and even carried in your rucksack in the field. In addition, because no piece of geological mapping can be considered complete until the geology has been interpreted and explained, chapters are provided on drawing cross-sections, on preparing and presenting ‘fair copy’ maps, and on presenting geological diagrams from your fieldwork suitable for inclusion in your report.

This book is designed primarily for university and college students taking geology as an honours course or as a subsidiary subject. Its aim is to lead the student by easy stages from the simplest ideas on geological structures right through the first year course on geological mapping, and much that it contains should be of use to students of geology at GeE 'A' level. The approach is designed to help the student working with little or no supervision: each new topic is simply explained and illustrated by text-figures, and exercises are set on succeeding problem maps.

The elementary student of geology may well first encounter the basic elements of structural geology through the study and interpretation of geological maps. However, there are few if any textbooks on structural geology which concentrate on showing how the forms of geological structures can be determined from the evidence presented by a geological map, even although such an analysis is fundamental to their interpretation. Admittedly, there are several laboratory manuals on the British market which offer a very elementary introduction to the basic methods used in the interpretation of geological maps.

GEOLOGICAL maps represent the expression on the earth’s surface of the underlying geological structure. For this reason the ability to correctly interpret the relationships displayed on a geological map relies heavily on a knowledge of the basic principles of structural geology.

The geological terminology used in a course using this material is minimal and much less difficult than the new terminology required in many other science courses. The prerequisite or accompanying a geological map interpretation course would be a lecture course in first-year physical geology. For those who have not previously followed a geology course, the essential principles involved are explained as we progress. Definitions and terminology are presented incrementally and may be recognized as words or phrases that are explained in the Appendix. The full meaning or usage of terms may only become apparent later after completion of an exercise. The first three chapters essentially duplicate material from a first-year geology course.

In geological maps, the undulation of the topography is represented by height contours. These contours represent lines along which all the points have the same altitude. Height contours are represented usually by broken lines and the numbers attached to them indicate the altitude of the corresponding contour.

На базе выявленной вертикальной петрогеохимической зональ ности (ВПГЗ) разработаны классификация химических элементов, понятие градиента геохимической подвижности, коэффициентов металлогенической специализации.
