Early organic evolution. Implication for mineral and energy resources / Ранняя органическая эволюция. Значение для минеральных и энергетических ресурсов

This volume is the final outcome of a conference designed to wrap up IOCP Project 157 (" Early Organic Evolution and Mineral and Energy Resources ") after a decade of prolific activity. The picturesque solitude of Maria Laach Abbey in the Eifel Mountains (FRO) provided the appropriate setting for a conclave of some 80 specialists from the various walks of the field who, during the week of Sept. 19 - 23, 1988, strived hard to define the state of the art in the principal segments of this Earth Science frontier. <...>

Early precambrian eclogites of the Belomorian province, Fennoscandian shield. Field guidebook / Раннедокембрийские эклогиты Беломорской провинции, фенноскандинавский щит. Полевой путеводитель

Early Precambrian eclogites are widespread in the Belomorian Province of the Fennoscandian shield. There are three points of view on the their age: 1) Archean and Paleoproterozoic; 2) solely Mesoarchean; 3) solely Paleoproterozoic. The goal of this field trip is to show all these types of eclogites including Archean and Paleoproterozoic (from the authors' point of view) eclogites, eclogitized Paleoproterozoic coronitic gabbroids, Archean zoisitites and their structural position in the Gridino, Salma (Uzkaya Salma and Shirokaya Salma) and Kuru-Vaara areas of the Belomorian Province. The geological excursions provide a good opportunity for the participants and the reader to exanimate these contradicting points of view immediately at beautiful outcrops on islands of the White Sea, on the benches of the Kuru-Vaara quarry and in the walls of road pits in the Salma area.
This Field Guidebook is of interest for geologists, petrologists and geochronologists who study the early evolution of the Earth and HP-UHP metamorphic processes.

Early–Middle Ordovician nappe tectonics of the junction between the Kokchetav HP-UHP metamorphic belt and the Stepnyak paleoisland arc

The North Kokchetav tectonic zone is located between the Kokchetav HP-UHP metamorphic belt and the Stepnyak zone of Ordovician island arc and oceanic complexes. The Kokchetav zone is a collage of nappes (thrust sheets) that consist of basement gneiss and sedimentary rocks of the Kokchetav microcontinent, granite gneiss, mica schists with eclogite blocks, the Shchuch’e ophiolite, Middle Proterozoic felsic volcanics, and Arenigian siliceous-terrigenous sediments with olistostromes. The latter are of gravity-sliding origin and their clastic material includes quartz-muscovite and quartz-garnet-muscovite schists, gneiss, dolomite, and amphibolite. The sheet boundaries are marked by mylonite and Early Ordovician mica schists (40Ar/39Ar ages of syntectonic muscovite are 489–469 Ma). The North Kokchetav collage of compositionally diverse thrust sheets can be interpreted as a collisional zone. According to geological evidence, tectonic activity in the zone lasted as late as the Middle Ordovician. Syncollisional thrusting in the North Kokchetav zone was coeval with the latest dynamic metamorphic event in the history of the Kokchetav belt. All events of retrograde metamorphism and exhumation of HP and UHP rocks in the belt have Cambrian ages, i.e., the rocks had been exhumed prior to the Early–Middle Ordovician collisions and the related orogeny.

Earth and life processes discovered from subseafloor environments. A Decade of Science Achieved by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) / Земля и жизненные процессы условий морского дна. Достижения Комплексной программы морского бурения

Since 1968, the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP: 1968–1983), Ocean Drilling Program (ODP: 1983–2003) and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP: 2003–2013) have provided crucial records of past and present processes and interactions within and between the biosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere.

Earth as an evolving planetary system / Земля как развивающаяся планетарная система

Although this book began life in 1976 with the title Plate Tectonics and Crustal Evolution, the subject matter has gradually changed focus with subsequent editions, and especially since the third edition in 1989. In the past decade it has become increasingly clear that the various components of Earth act as a single, interrelated system, often referred to as the Earth System. One reviewer of the fourth edition pointed out that the title of the book was no longer appropriate, since plate tectonics was not a major focus. For this reason, for what would have been the fifth edition of the Plate Tectonics book, I have introduced a new title for the book, Earth as an Evolving Planetary System, which will be continued into still later editions <...>

Earth as an evolving planetary system / Земля как эволюционирующая планетная система

A system is an entity composed of diverse but interrelated parts that function as a whole (Kump et al., 1999a). The individual parts, often called components, interact with each other as the system evolves with time. Components include reservoirs of matter or energy, described by mass or volume, and subsystems, which behave as systems within a system. In recent years, the Earth has been considered a complex planetary system that evolved over 4.6 billion years of time. It includes reservoirs, such as the crust, mantle, and core, and subsystems, such as the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Because many of the reservoirs in the Earth interact with each other and with subsystems, such as the atmosphere, there is an increasing tendency to consider most or all of the Earth’s reservoirs as subsystems. <...>

Earth materials. Introduction to mineralogy and petrology / Состав Земли. Введение в минералогию и петрологию

The fundamental concepts of mineralogy and petrology are explained in this highly illustrated, full-color textbook, to create a concise overview for students studying Earth materials. The relationship between minerals and rocks and how they relate to the broader Earth, materials, and environmental sciences is interwoven throughout. Beautiful photos of specimens and CrystalViewer’s three-dimensional illustrations allow students to easily visualize minerals, rocks, and crystal structures.

Earth materials. Introduction to mineralogy and petrology / Состав Земли. Введение в минералогию и петрологию

Over the past two decades, many curriculum changes have occurred in geology, Earth science, and environmental science programs in universities. Many of these have involved the compression of separate one-semester courses in mineralogy, optical mineralogy, and petrology into a singlesemester offering that combines mineralogy and petrology, commonly called Earth Materials. Such a course is a challenge to the instructor (or a team of instructors) and the students. This is especially so when few, if any, textbooks for such a one-semester course have been available.

Earth surface processes and environmental changes in East Asia. Records from lake-catchment systems / Экзогенные процессы и изменение окружающей среды в Восточной Азии. По данным исследования озерных отложений

We may be faced with natural and anthropogenic environmental changes never found in instrumental observation records, not only locally but also globally. Generally, it is comparatively easy to find the cause and effect of local and shortterm changes, whereas it is difficult to establish causal relationships for global and long-term environmental issues. One of the most significant issues in environmental changes to be discussed is knowing how earth surface environments responded to the changes in the past, because that knowledge is required in order to estimate future environmental responses to changes. We have only limited short-term observational data in the instrumental observation period to provide some clues to find causal relations for the estimation. Most areas lack past quantitative records, especially data available for quantitative discussion, although data on earth surface responses to large and long-term global changes are included in past proxy records. <...>
