The use of computers as primary tools for carrying out geological research and databases for storing geological information has grown considerably in recent years. In the same period there has been a dramatic increase in the degree of collaboration between scientific institutions, universities and industry, and between geologists working in different countries. To facilitate collaborative work amongst geologists and to maximise efficiency in the use of geological databases a common approach to classifying and naming rocks is essential. This publication presents a scheme for the classification and nomenclature of igneous rocks that is practical, logical, systematic, hierarchical and uses clearly defined, unambiguous rock names.

The purpose of this report is to present a classification for lithified and unlithified sediments that is logical, systematic, hierachial and uses clearly defined, unambiguous names. Although classification systems for igneous rocks have been published (International Union of Geological Sciences, Subcommission on the Systematics of Igneous Rocks), a unifying scheme for classifying sedimentary rocks and their unlithified equivalents has not yet been formulated. Existing sediment and sedimentary rock nomenclature has been developed on a wide range of criteria, such as composition, texture and other physical attributes, as well as depositional environment, genetic relationship and local economic importance. As a result, sediment and sedimentary rock terminology tends to be inconsistent and lacking in basic general guidelines. <...>

The year 2020 marks the 100-year anniversary of Conrad Schlumberger’s publication on electrical methods, a document that serves as the foundation of modern-day resistivity and induced polarization methods. These methods are now two of the most widely used geophysical techniques for probing the near-surface (upper few hundred metres of the Earth’s crust). Although originally developed for hydrocarbon and mineral exploration, their popularity in near-surface applications grew rapidly from the widespread recognition that subsurface electrical properties are often well correlated to physical and chemical properties of fluids within the pore space (e.g. saturation, salinity) and lithological characteristics (e.g. porosity, clay content) needed to understand a wide range of near-surface properties and processes.

Resource and Reserve Valuation Practices in CIS Countries / Практика оценки ресурсов и резервов в странах СНГ

Russia has increasingly become one of the most important centres for the activities on raw commodity assessments in the recent years due to its enormous resources spread out over a huge territory. As Russia is rapidly closing the gap between the requirements of the internationally accepted codes and its own resource assessment standard, the practical reality is that the legacy of the Soviet Union for the assessment of resources is still active and alive today. However, this does not mean the requirements of the old Soviet system, now the Russian system, are redundant or unacceptable to the codes seen in the international scenery; but it is rather a descriptive and useful tool which guides the competent persons and practitioners in a well prescribed way when they are assessing the mineral resources in Russia. As the old Soviet standard has also been adopted into the national legislations in the other former Soviet Union countries similar to the current Russian system, the Russian code has become an important element in reconciliation of the resources in accordance with the criteria defined in the internationally recognised codes for Reporting Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves such as JORC. This article reviews the experience of IMC in resource estimation in both Russia and neighbouring CIS countries in compliance with both the national code and international codes, and the related issues and obstacles faced and dealt by the competent persons <...>

Results of a stream sediment geochemical orientation on streams draining the Pascua and Lama gold mineralization. Chile and Argentina, South Americ / Геохимическая специализация донных отложений ручьев, дренирующих золоторудные месторождения Паскуа и Лама

Precious and base metal mineralization has long been known to occur in the El Indio area of central Chile. This mineralization occurs as veins containing very high grade Au and Ag, which was the main target for the majority of subsequent exploration. This exploration usually employed the use of remote sensing techniques to highlight color anomalies related to hydrothermal alteration, and local prospectors and geologists to follow up these anomalies. The recent discovery of significant disseminated Au mineralization south of El Indio in both Chile and Argentina has shown that the El Indio belt of rocks is probably under explored. Exploration techniques which can detect a variety of styles of mineralization in a single pass, and which are economically viable, must be introduced to the Andean exploration community. One of these techniques is stream sediment geochemical sampling; a well used exploration method in many parts of the world, but apparently only recently used in the Andes in a systematic fashion. <...>

The current volume has taken a different approach from previous volumes concerned with major groups of rock-forming minerals. Some of the contents have previously been organized by the investigative technique or groups of similar techniques: crystal-structure rei nement, spectroscopy, TEM etc. Here, we have taken an approach that focuses on aspects of amphiboles rather than experimental techniques: crystal chemistry, new compositions, long-range order, short-range order etc., and all experimental results germane to these topics are discussed in each chapter. The intent of this approach is to focus on amphiboles, and to emphasize that many techniques are necessary to fully understand each aspect of the amphiboles and their behavior in both natural and industrial processes.
