The Eocene Green River Formation in Wyoming has long served as a standard for lacustrine depositional systems. This lacustrine formation, excluding the culminating phase, was deposited in a closed hydrographic basin. The position of the boundary between lake and mudflat margin was dictated by the inflow evaporation ratio (inflow greater than evaporation = transgression; inflow less than evaporation = regression).

The formation and transformation of oceanic sediments involve geological, biological, physical and chemical processes. The knowledge of oceanic sediments and other objects of the Earth and Ocean Sciences therefore requires a multidisciplinary approach. This knowledge considerably increased during the past 50 years, closely following significant progress in the methods of investigation at sea and in the laboratory. In addition, ocean exploration is deeply rooted in History. Our understanding of the Ocean (including oceanic sediments and related processes) progressed step-by-step, following the evolution of techniques and ideas. Chapters 1 and 2 summarize the historical aspects of Oceanography (focusing on Marine Geology), along with the variety of processes that drive the formation and transport of sediment particles as well as their accumulation and transformation in oceanic sediments. <...>

Te mining sector is essential in the economic development of many resource rich African countries as it has the potential to fnance infrastructural developments which are much needed in Africa. Tis is due to the fact that various minerals are used as raw materials in different sectors including construction and transport. Most importantly, mineral materials also play an important role in industrialization and urbanization which are now rapidly escalating on the continent.

In this introductory chapter we describe general problems of spatial environmental data analysis, modeling, validation and visualization. Many of these problems are considered in detail in the following chapters using geostatistical models, machine learning algorithms (MLA) of neural networks and Support Vector Machines, and the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) approach. The term “mapping” in the book is considered not only as an interpolation in two- or threedimensional geographical space, but in a more general sense of estimating the desired dependencies from empirical data.

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with guidance on the development and implementation of cost- effective and defensible environmental sampling programs that are designed to collect data needed to:

• Define the nature and extent of contamination

• Calculate baseline human health and ecological risk

• Identify contaminant migration pathways

• Predict rates of contaminant migration

• Evaluate the viability of potential remedial alternatives

• Support treatability testing

• Assess the effectiveness of a remedial alternative during implementation

• Determine if remedial action objectives have been met
