Uncloaking invisible gold: use of nanosims to evaluate gold, trace elements, and sulfur isotopes in pyrite from Carlin-type gold deposits

Вскрытие невидимого золота: использование наноразмеров для оценки содержания золота, микроэлементов и изотопов серы в пирите из золоторудных месторождений типа Карлин

One-hundred-nm-resolution secondary ionizing mass spectrometry (nanoSIMS) was used to determine the distribution of Au, Cu, As, Sb, and S, and stable isotopes of S (34S/32S) in gold-bearing pyrite from two refractory Carlin-type gold deposits: West Banshee, northern Carlin Trend, and Turquoise Ridge, Getchell Trend, located in northern Nevada. NanoSIMS maps reveal that gold occurs in two discrete episodes in each deposit. Elevated gold concentrations correlate with elevated concentrations of As, Sb, Cu ± Te, and lower 34S/32S ratios, compared to periods when gold was not deposited. Precipitation of elevated gold and trace elements at West Banshee was followed by precipitation of pyrite with lower gold concentrations, whereas at Turquoise Ridge precipitation of trace element-rich pyrite was followed by precipitation of late ore-stage minerals. These NanoSIMS results are consistent with formation of the deposits by the episodic incursion of gold-rich fluids into hydrothermal systems otherwise dominated by gold-poor fluids. Such gold-rich fluid pulses may be related to incursions of magmatic fluid, which have been shown to have high concentrations of gold, arsenic, and copper in porphyry and high-sulfidation epithermal systems.

Underground mining method selection with the application of TOPSIS method

Multi-criteria decision-making methods are widely used to solve various problems in the industry, as well as to support the planning and designing industrial processes. Mining is a very complex and responsible activity, so when making a major decision, it is necessary to take into account several parameters and perform their detailed analysis. Due to the importance of proper decision making, multi-criteria optimization methods have a very wide application in mining. One of the most complex and important things in mining is the choice of mining method for underground exploitation, where the application of multi-criteria decision-making methods can help a lot in making the right decision. This paper will present the choice of the method of mining excavation by the TOPSIS method, according to which it was obtained that the Sublevel Caving is optimal for a given case.<...>

Underground mining methofs and applications / Методы и области применения подземной добычи полезных ископаемых

Ore is an economic concept. It is defined as a concentration of minerals that can be exploited and turned into a saleable product to generate a financially acceptable profit under existing economic conditions. The definition of ore calls for afterthoughts. Ore does not properly exist until it has been labeled as such. To name a mineral prospect an ore body requires more information than needed to establish metal grades. Sufficient knowledge of the mineral deposit, mining technology, processing methods, and costs is needed for undertaking a feasibility study and proving the prospect worthy of being developed into a mine.

Understanding fossils. An introduction to invertebate palaeontology / Изучение окаменелостей. Введение в палеонтологию беспозвоночных

Fossils are among the most highly prized natural objects in the world. They figure in our everyday lives as decorative objects in our homes, and as the dinosaur products which fill the toy and book shops and which periodically appear in the cereal packets at our breakfast tables. Collecting fossils is an absorbing pastime which grades into a passion for weekend geologists, and many students enter higher education through their interest, reading for degrees in the earth sciences which have a direct benefit for the national economy. <...>

Understanding geology through maps / Понимание геологии через карты

The geological terminology used in a course using this material is minimal and much less difficult than the new terminology required in many other science courses. The prerequisite or accompanying a geological map interpretation course would be a lecture course in first-year physical geology. For those who have not previously followed a geology course, the essential principles involved are explained as we progress. Definitions and terminology are presented incrementally and may be recognized as words or phrases that are explained in the Appendix. The full meaning or usage of terms may only become apparent later after completion of an exercise. The first three chapters essentially duplicate material from a first-year geology course.

Understanding mineral deposits / Понимание (изучение) месторождений полезных ископаемых

Mineral deposits have supplied useful or valuable material for human consumption long before they became objects of scientific curiosity or commercial exploitation. In fact, the earliest human interest in rocks was probably because of the easily accessible, useful (e.g., red pigment in the form of earthy hematite) or valuable (e.g., native gold and gemstones) materials they contained at places. In modern times, the study of mineral deposits has evolved into an applied science employing detailed field observations, sophisticated laboratory techniques for additional information, and computer modeling to build complex hypotheses. Understanding concepts that would someday help geologists to find new mineral deposits or exploit the known ones more efficiently have always been, and will continue to be, at the core of any course on mineral deposits, but it is a fascinating subject in its own right, even for students who do not intend to be professional economic geologists. I believe that a course on mineral deposits should be designed as a "capstone course" that illustrates a comprehensive application of concepts from many other disciplines in geology (mineralogy, stratigraphy and sedimentation, structure and tectonics, petrology, geochemistry, paleontology, geomorphology, etc.).

Unearthing. 3D implicit modelling. Celebrating Leapfrog’s 10 year anniversary / Извлечение из недр. Трехмерное неявное моделирование. Празднование 10-летнего юбилея Leapfrog

Explicit modelling in geological modelling is essentially akin to an engineering drawing process. The modeller defines geological structures such as veins and faults by explicitly drawing them on regularly spaced sections and joining them. The data may be used by the modeller to constrain where they draw, and there may be tools to accelerate the process, but fundamentally it is a process of drawing. This suits the engineering world where an exact definition of a structure is a precursor to its construction.

Upper cretaceous intraplate magmatic event in the North-Minusinsk depression: paleomagnetic and 40Ar/39Ar data

First paleomagnetic and isotope-geochronological data on four basaltic volcanic pipes of the North-Minusinsk depression are reported. It is shown that the volcanic pipes appeared between 82 and 77 Ma ago. All ChRM directions of the pipe basanites are of reverse polarity. This fact is in agreement with the 40Ar-?9Ar ages of the rocks (within the accuracy of the 40Ar-39Ar method). The revealed ChRM corresponds to the end of chron 33R of reverse polarity (according to the geomagnetic-polarity time scale). The paleomagnetic poles of the studied pipes differ from the APWP of Eurasia.

Uranium for nuclear power. Resources, mining and transformation to fuel / Уран для ядерной энергетики. Ресурсы, добыча и трансформация в топливо

Compared with other mineral commodities, especially metals, whose utility has become evident by centuries of trial and error, the appreciation of uranium has developed from theories based in physics in the 1930s to exploit the unique energy density of uranium’s transformation in nuclear fission. Initially this was in the crucible of a world war, but always beyond military uses was the promise of the “uranium boiler” canvassed in the second British MAUD (Military Application of Uranium Detonation) report in July 1941—the work of “one of the most effective scientific committees that ever existed.” <...>
