Geologic structures

"Geologic Structures" presents the facts of the architecture of the earth and explains the action of the forces which have produced that structure. In this, the third edition, the statement of pertinent mechanical principles precedes description, and description of each type of structure, such as folds, faults, etc., precedes the analysis of the stresses and strains involved in the particular change of form.

The book is designed to be a complete treatment of the subject within practicable limits. The teacher or student desiring a systematic course will find it in the successive chapters in the order of their arrangement. Having mastered the mechanical principles he will be in position to pursue the analysis of any structure in terms of stress and strain and to interpret observations he may himself make in the field. The practical usefulness of the book is enhanced by the addition of many problems and illustrations of facts, including geologic maps of typical areas.

A more elementary presentation may be selected, as indicated in the table of contents, to include the introduction and the descriptive chapters. The general reader may gather an understanding of current ideas of the earth's crust and of the constitution of the globe by scanning the introduction, the descriptions, and the final chapters.

The subject of structural geology has developed during the past half century from simple observation to scientific analysis according to mechanical principles. "Geologic Structures" has advanced through successive editions by similar stages. The present one is not merely a revision of former editions, but is a complete rearrangement, together with the addition of much new material to enhance its practical usefulness and to bring it up to date with current advances in the science.
