This SME Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves (the SME Guide) has been adopted by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME) for use by members of this organization and others. A history of the Guide is provided in Appendix H.

The SME Guide is recommended as a minimum standard for any individual, sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company, corporation, or other legal entity (Company) reporting Exploration Information and estimates of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves to outside parties for public or private purposes. iii. In the SME Guide, the definitions of some important terms are highlighted in bold text. The guidelines are written using regular font. Paragraphs with a border on the left side and  written in italics give directions on how to interpret definitions and guidelines.
