Mineralogy applied to ore dressing is a reliable guide for designing and operating an efficient concentrator. A procedure for conductiqg mineralogical studies in conjunction with ore dressing was, therefore, developed. The procedure includes characterizing the ore and analysing the mill products. Characterizing the ore involves identifying the minerals, determining the mineral quantities, and measuring the size distributions of the minerals in the uncrushed ore. The size distribution data are incorporated into liberation models to predict mineral liberations in screened fractions. The mill products are analysed by studying polished sections to define the behaviour of the minerals in the concentrator. This involves measuring the liberation and size distribution for each mineral and characterizing the middling particles. The quantities of free and unliberated mineral grains in the concentrate and tailings from each circuit define the behaviour of the minerals and show whether poor metal recoveries are due to poor concentrator performance or to the nature of the ore. <...>
