The book is concerned with the physical properties, chemical composition, and origin of minerals, and also with the systematic description of the latter. The petrographic sections of the text introduce to the essentials of igneous sedimentary and metamorphic rocks: their composition, occurrence, and origin. The description of minerals and rocks is, where appropriate, supplied with an indication of their practical value and sites-of occurrence.
The issues of geometrical crystallography and crystal chemistry are dealt with in the text as much as it is necessary for the successful grasping of the concepts of mineralogy and petrography. Also covered are the basic concepts of geochemistry: the elements of the structure and composition of the Earth’s crusts, average contents of chemical elements, their geochemical classification, rock dating, and so on. For selftesting (which is especially important for extramural students) at the end of each chapter are given review questions covering-the appropriate material.
Appendices describe the treatment of heavy concentrates, separation of accessory minerals, processing of chemical analyses of minerals. They also contain the determinative table of minerals based on their outward appearance, reference tables, etc.
The textbook is intended for the students of mineralogy and petrography at universities and also for technical college students majoring in geology.
