Having been a part of marine biota, the coleoid cephalopods played and recently still play an important role in nekton assemblages. As it has several times been mentioned, coleoid cephalopods belong to rarer fossils (except belemnites), thus the reconstruction of their evolution, paleobiology and ecology suggests the combined actualistic - neontologic and palaeontologic approach.
