Sedimentation, tectonics and eustasy. Sea-level changes at active margins / Осадконакопление, тектоника и эвстазия. Изменения уровня моря на активных окраинах
The papers in this Special Publication arise from a discussion meeting, ‘Sea-level changes at active plate margins: processes and products’, sponsored by the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) and the Geological Society of London, and organized by the British Sedimentological Research Group (BSRG). The meeting was held in London in May 1989. Forty-seven papers and eleven posters were presented, of which 25 are published here. Only one paper in this volume (by Y. Saito) was not presented at the meeting.
The idea for the conference came from a paper by Anthony Hallam and co-workers, published in the Geological Magazine (123, 425—435) in 1986, where they suggested that the effects of global sea-level change could be recognized in the Cretaceous of the Andean back-arc basin. This prompted me to wonder whether such global effects were common in tectonically active basins, given the background of recent seismic and sequence-stratigraphic studies which had emphasized the role of eustatic sea-level fluctuations in controlling sedimentation patterns. Most research was on the relatively simple interaction of sea level with lithosphere stretching and thermal subsidence in ensialic sedimentary basins and at passive continental margins. However, the basin inputs to the sequence-stratigraphic accommodation model (relative sea-level change, tectonic subsidence or uplift, and sediment added) were common to all basins and could be applied to active plate margins. <...>
