Rock mechanics is the scientific basis for construction in rock. Its task is to formulate laws describing the mechanical behaviour and permeability of rock masses and to develop a technology of testing which enables the determination of rock mechanics parameters. Furtltermore, the development of procedures to investigate the stability of openings, foundations and slopes in rock masses is also to be numbered amongst the tasks of rock mechanics. Rock engineering, on the other hand, is concerned more with questions relating to design and construction.
The author, together with his assistants in both research and engineering practice, has been concerned with these questions for more than 20 years. During this period, conceptual models of the anisotropic mechanical behaviour and permeability of rock have been developed and successfully applied in numerous projects. The rock mass parameters required in these cases were determined using the testing procedures available at the time. Computer-oriented methods of analysis corresponding to the current "state of the art" in rock mechanics have been developed for and applied to stability analyses. <...>
