Petroleum geoscience is a multidisciplinary subject, underpinned by the broad spectrum of the Earth sciences. The aim of this book is to cover the fundamentals of the Earth sciences and examine their role in controlling the global occurrence and distribution of oil and gas resources. It also explains the principles, practices and the terminology associated with the upstream sector (exploration and production activities) of the oil industry. The book is intended also for non-geoscientists — petroleum engineers, drilling engineers and petrophysicists — who, due to their interaction with geologists and geophysicists, benefit from some knowledge of the latters’ role and work practices in exploration ventures
